Mazatlán means "land of the deer" in Nahuatl, the local indigenous language. The town was founded on May 14, 1531 by Nuno Guzman. During the 17th century, Mazatlán was used as a shipping point for gold and minerals. In 1864, it was attacked by the French ship Le Cordelliere. The ensuing battle and ultimate victory is celebrated every year with a carnival during the Naval Combat show.
